Death in Fremont Canyon

ALCOVA – A peaceful morning in Fremont Canyon, a popular destination for climbers and tourists because of its steep rock walls and dramatic views, was suddenly disrupted around 10:30 a.m. today by the flashing red and blue lights of the Natrona County Sheriff’s Department’s search and rescue team, the fire department and finally the loud landing approach of a Bell 407 Wyoming Life Flight helicopter.

According to the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, climber Dana Bouchard witnessed the arrival of medical personnel in Fremont Canyon, where an accident claimed the life of one person.

“We heard a helicopter in the distance … and when it got close enough, I saw it was a rescue helicopter and my heart started pounding because there are climbers here and we all look out for each other. I was scared there had been an accident,” said Dana Bouchard, a rock climber who was in the canyon at the time of the incident.

It wasn’t a rock climber, but Bouchard’s instinct was right.

Kiera Grogan, spokeswoman for the Natrona County Sheriff’s Department, told the Star-Tribune that one person was killed in an accident involving heavy construction equipment near the Fremont Canyon Power Plant on Kortes Road on Wednesday.

Local police and the Natrona County Coroner’s Office remained on scene throughout the afternoon conducting an investigation. The investigation may be turned over to a federal agency if the incident occurred on federal lands.

The Bureau of Reclamation could not be reached for comment. The Sheriff’s Department did not provide further details as the incident and investigation were ongoing Tuesday afternoon.
