Appeal to the attacks of postal delivery dogs – small dogs are the worst

More than 55 postal workers are attacked by dogs every week while at work, leading to calls for dog owners to put their dogs down.

According to Australia Post, there have been an alarming eleven incidents involving dogs every day over the past six months.

Queensland continues to record the highest number of incidents with 466 incidents in the last six months, followed by NSW with 408 and Western Australia with 215.

Although no breed of dog is more likely to attack than another, Australia Post explains that smaller dogs are the most aggressive.

Rod Maule, Australia Post’s General Manager of Safety and Welfare, urged dog owners to take responsibility for their pets.

“Our team members just want to be able to deliver to our customers without being attacked, harassed or chased by dogs,” Maule said.

“Postal carriers will not make deliveries if it is too dangerous for them to do so and will stop delivering to the customer’s home address until the danger is removed.”

According to Australia Post data, half of all incidents occur on customers’ property, with almost a third of them occurring at the front door.

Dog bites during letter delivery are particularly worrying: 15% of incidents occur when the postman puts letters in the mailbox.

In addition, Australia Post reports dog-related incidents to the relevant local authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken.
