23-year-old Virginia triple murder suspect arrested after chase in New York, sheriff says – NBC4 Washington

According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, police in New York arrested a 23-year-old Virginia suspect on Thursday evening on suspicion of triple murder following a chase.

According to the sheriff’s office, Alyssa Jane Venable is accused of killing her roommates Robert John McGuire (77), Gregory Scott Powell (60) and Carol Anne Reese (65).

New York State Police spotted a gray 2009 Honda Civic matching the description of the car driven by Venable on Interstate 86 at around 5:45 p.m. and attempted to stop it.

Authorities said the driver led police on a chase at speeds of up to 100 mph.

Police used a “tire deflation device” to crash the car, and Venable was taken into custody in Steuben County, authorities said. She was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The homicide victims were found around 10 p.m. Tuesday after officers were called to their home in the 10500 block of White Street Court in Spotsylvania for a welfare check. All three victims suffered injuries to their upper bodies, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said.

Venable is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said some details of the crime are being kept secret so as not to hinder the ongoing investigation. No information on a possible motive was given. Sheriff’s detectives are working with the New York State Police to gather additional evidence.

Venable was charged with assault last month. The sheriff’s office has not said whether that incident might be connected to Tuesday night’s triple homicide, but it will be part of the investigation.

Neighbors said the residents of the house were quiet and reserved. They believe Venable moved into the house about a month ago.

Authorities did not say whether Venable had any connection with any of the victims.

The U.S. Marshals Service assisted the New York State Police in the arrest.
