One person died following the incident on Monday evening in Folly Beach

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCBD) – Authorities responded to an incident involving a missing North Carolina person on Folly Beach Monday evening that is affecting traffic.

According to Folly Beach Public Safety, a BOLO was served to the department at 8 p.m. Shortly thereafter, officers located a vehicle matching the missing person’s vehicle description and conducted a traffic stop on W Ashley Avenue.


Folly Beach Public Safety spokesman Sergeant Zach Halpern said the driver of the vehicle exited with a firearm in his hand. Officers verbally ordered him to put the weapon down, but the man self-inflicted a gunshot wound and collapsed.

EMS and first responders immediately began life-saving measures. Charleston County EMS transported the individual to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he succumbed to his injuries. Sergeant Halpern said none of the officers fired their weapons during this incident.

Authorities say W Ashley Ave is closed from the 500 block and will remain closed for several hours. The person’s name is not being released at this time.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office and Folly Beach Public Safety are investigating this incident.
