Police officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler makes statement

The police officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler before the second round of the PGA Championship again presented his version of events.

Louisville Metro Police Detective Bryan Gillis issued a statement to Louisville television station WAVE in which he spoke about many things, including the condition of his $80 pair of pants, which he said were ruined when they were dragged by Scheffler’s vehicle as he attempted to enter the Valhalla Golf Course.

Prosecutors initially charged Scheffler with second-degree assault on a police officer (a Class C felony), third-degree criminal damage to property, reckless driving and failure to obey traffic signals issued by a traffic officer, each of which is a misdemeanor.

Those charges were dropped this week.

However, Gillis insists that he was injured by Scheffler’s vehicle.

“To be clear, I was dragged by the car, I fell to the ground and suffered visible injuries to my knees and wrists,” Gillis said in a statement. “I will recover from this and everything will be OK. That is all I will say about the incident.”

In the arrest incident report, Gillis said he, wearing a full LMPD uniform and a reflective rain jacket, stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him directions, but the suspect “refused to obey and accelerated forward,” knocking the officer to the ground and “irreparably” damaging his uniform pants, valued at about $80.

“Yes, the department made us buy damn $80 pants. They were actually ruined for those affected. But Scottie, it’s all good. I never thought I’d have the most famous pants in the country for a few weeks because of it. Take care and stay healthy,” Gillis said in a statement.

Both Gillis and Scheffler expressed their condolences to the family of John Mills, the volunteer who was killed by a shuttle bus that caused the traffic chaos and led to Scheffler’s arrest.

“As I have said before, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding. I hold no ill will toward Officer Gillis. I want to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same,” Scheffler said on Instagram. “Police officers have a difficult job and I respect them greatly. This was a serious misunderstanding in a chaotic situation.
