BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Family, friends and former teammates of 13-year-old Jermel Ware gathered at the Jayce Park practice field in Belleville Friday night. Coaches say he trained with passion on the field.

Jermel died in a go-kart accident that is still under investigation.

His mother described her son as caring, loving, energetic and passionate about sports. The tragedy occurred the day before she graduated from Washington University.

Friends held balloons and candles as they shared joyful memories during Friday’s vigil.

“It makes me sad because I know all those hearts are broken, but it makes me happy to know that he had that impact on everyone he touched or met,” said Jasmine Phiffer, Jermel’s mother.

Former coaches say Jermel never wanted to leave the field. He played on offense and defense and was coachable, respectful and full of energy, they said.

“He was really good at hard work and dedication, so this is a dedication to him and his hard work,” Belleville Little Knights coach Kejuan Billops said.

Demarquo Sanders trained Jermel at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Community Center in East St. Louis. He said it was moving to see the large circle of family and friends who gathered to pay their respects.

“It just speaks to who Jermel was,” he said. “Jermel was one of those kids that you enjoyed seeing because of his smile and his energy.”

Jermel’s mother received a box containing notes from classmates and memorabilia.

“It’s something I can look at on my sad days,” she said.

Phiffer appreciates the support everyone has offered, but added that she is also there for anyone who is struggling right now.

“Take it one day at a time and let it out,” Sanders said. “It’s okay to cry.”

Services for Jermel will be May 31 at New Life in Christ Church, 689 Scott Troy Rd., #1907, Lebanon, Illinois. The viewing will be at 10 a.m. and the funeral service will begin at 12 p.m.
