MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – As the weekend draws to a close, our weather pattern has finally changed. We started Sunday with lots of clouds and light showers in the area. For the rest of the day, we’ll still be watching for more showers and possibly thunderstorms to develop in the area. Most of the activity will be scattered and not severe. But we could see some of those thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 40 mph, as well as some impressive downpours. We’ll see a break from the showers overnight, but Monday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will be back in our area by the evening.

Tuesday morning will start out a little quieter, but we expect widespread dense fog to develop by mid-morning, with visibility dropping to less than 1/8 mile in some areas. Highs on Tuesday will reach the upper 80s under partly cloudy skies. The heat of the day combined with the humidity will help destabilize the atmosphere before thunderstorms develop to the west.

We have demanded First warning Days for Tuesday and Wednesday with the possibility of strong to severe storms moving in from the west overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Forecast models indicate this system will remain intact through the night and into Wednesday morning. Very strong straight-line winds, along with large hail, are likely to be the greatest threat from this system.

What’s next …

Once the storms have passed on Wednesday morning, we expect conditions to improve throughout the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain in our forecast for the rest of the work week before transitioning to a sunnier and calmer weekend.

Looking ahead…

Temperatures will be just above 30 degrees this week, and combined with higher relative humidity, we will have some uncomfortable afternoons ahead of us with temperatures likely to be just above 30 degrees according to the heat index.
