Mayor and police chief say Newport News has reduced gun violence

Mayor Philip Jones and Police Chief Steve Drew will discuss “gun violence statistics” related to murders and shootings so far this year.

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia – Officials in Newport News will speak at a press conference Wednesday morning about the reduction in gun violence in the city so far this year.

According to a statement from the city, both Mayor Philip Jones and Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew will deliver speeches.

They will discuss “gun violence statistics, with a particular focus on murders and shootings in the first half of the year,” as well as police and city initiatives to reduce gun violence across the city.

The press conference is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. at the Newport News Police Department headquarters on Jefferson Avenue.
