Coconut Grove residents continue to push for police investigation into peacock abuse

COCONUT GROVE, Florida. – Coconut Grove resident Nannette O’Connell saw something strange coming out of her trash can just off Hilola Street Monday morning.

“I saw peacock feathers sticking out,” O’Connell said.

She never looked inside, but came in the evening to put a garbage bag in and made a horrible discovery.

“I noticed that a whole bird was placed there,” she said.

A dead peacock had been stuffed into her garbage can.

“It was wet and you could still see some dried blood and there was some dried blood on his feet as well,” O’Connell said.

She notified her neighbors online and some of them came to see the bird for themselves.

But when they turned the body over, they made another disturbing discovery.

“A bullet came out,” O’Connell said, adding that she believes it indicates something more sinister. “I don’t think this was an accident. I think someone did it on purpose. Someone wanted to kill the bird.”

Local 10 News reported Monday on a suspicious incident involving a peacock that occurred Sunday evening about two blocks away.

Neighbors reported seeing people allegedly mistreating a peacock and one found a hunting arrow in their yard.

Another neighbor told Local 10 News’ Liane Morejon that her son had seen teenagers aiming a blowgun or other weapon at the peacocks.

They are now calling on the Miami police to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

“I actually want them to investigate the incident because it’s not like someone accidentally ran over the peacock,” O’Connell said. “It was done on purpose.”

Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call Miami Police at 305-603-6640.
