Construction Monitoring: Canalside Walkway – Buffalo Rising

The approximately 3,000-square-foot Canalside Gateway building is framed. The building will be a four-story structure that will include one level along the canal towpath. It will provide information, public restrooms, security, retail and ADA accessibility between the two-level Canalside site, while consolidating the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation’s operations in one location. Pennrose will develop the remainder of the North Aud Block site with a mix of residential and commercial space.

Manning Squires Hennig Company, Inc. of Batavia was awarded a $14.25 million contract to construct the building, which includes relocating an existing sanitary sewer line that runs through the project site. Funding is provided by the New York Power Authority.

To the east, the two-building Heritage Point project at Main and Scott streets remains stalled (below). Developer Sinatra and Company Real Estate is seeking a $4 million government loan to secure new financing for the project, which will include restaurants, retail and office space, as well as 61 apartments. The ECHDC is getting impatient with the delay, a boon for an agency that has overseen the (lack of) development of Canalside since 2005.
