UFC star Jon Jones faces two misdemeanors in connection with a doping test

UFC heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has been charged with assault and interference with communications following an incident with a doping testing agent.

The charges, both of which are misdemeanors, were filed after Crystal Martinez, a drug testing agent for Drug Free Sport, claimed she was assaulted by Jones on March 30 while collecting a sample for her company, the UFC’s anti-doping program partner.

Martinez claims that after Jones attempted to provide a urine sample, she and her partner claimed he was unable to provide one. However, when she suggested a blood test instead, Jones became irritated, picked up her phone and began recording her.

Martinez claims that Jones appeared to be drunk during the incident, saying that people who come to his house “end up dead.”

If convicted on both counts, Jones faces less than a year in prison and fines.

Jones, 36, spoke out about the incident after it occurred earlier this year.

“I want to clarify that there is a video of both drug testers leaving my house after the testing session where we high-five and hug,” Jones wrote on social media. “Although I was frustrated by the unprofessionalism and used profanity out of frustration, it ended in a friendly and amicable manner, not at all threatening. I actually celebrated a friend’s birthday party at my house and find it perfectly normal to celebrate in the comfort of my own home.”

“I must say, this particular tester behaved quite unprofessionally and even violated standard protocol as well as HIPAA laws. In the 20 years I have been drug testing, I have never had such an incident happen to me with a DCO officer.”

Although Jones is arguably the best heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter to ever grace a UFC octagon, he has had many problems outside of his sport.

In September 2021, he was charged with domestic violence after allegedly hitting his fiancée. Jones also headbutted a patrol vehicle after police arrested him in that incident. The charge was later dropped, although he pleaded not guilty to tampering with a police vehicle.

A year earlier, Jones was arrested for drunk driving after a police officer responded to a gunshot and found him with an open bottle of alcohol and a handgun in his car.

Jones later accepted a plea deal to reduce the charges of drunken driving, negligent use of a weapon, possession of an open container and driving without proof of insurance to just drunken driving. He was placed on probation.

Jones has also failed a drug test in the past when he was found to have taken two banned substances in July 2016. The UFC was forced to remove him from the UFC 200 card.

However, USADA later determined that Jones had taken a contaminated bottle of the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis and was unaware that it contained banned substances. Despite this, the UFC suspended him for a year and stripped him of his interim light heavyweight title.

Jones is still active in the sport today, but is struggling with a torn chest muscle that he sustained during training last year.

While he tries to return to the Octagon, Briton Tom Aspinall already owns the interim heavyweight title and will defend it against Curtis Blaydes on July 27th.
