A woman was arrested after smuggling $1.6 million worth of fentanyl into Utah, according to police

ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) – A woman is facing charges after she allegedly smuggled 108,000 fentanyl pills worth an estimated $1,620,000 into the Beehive State.

Jazmin Tentory-Ortega, 27, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, a second-degree felony St. George Police Department said.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, St. George officers received an anonymous tip that a white Nissan Quest with Texas plates would be driving through the area in a few hours carrying “a significant amount of narcotics,” they said it in the affidavit.

In response, officers headed toward the southern state border on I-15 — since drug trafficking most often occurs from south to north, they said.

About three hours after the initial tip, officers saw the vehicle crossing the state line into Utah. According to the affidavit, upon seeing the police cars, the driver of the vehicle quickly slowed down.

Officers began following the vehicle and said the driver “quickly activated the right turn signal and began to exit.” The vehicle then turned back into the lane, failed to signal, went below the speed limit and failed to stay in the lane, the affidavit states.

Officers stopped the car and identified the driver as Jazmin Tentory-Ortega. The affidavit states that her car was completely empty except for a dark duffel bag in the back seat. The officer’s K-9 sniffed the outside of her car, prompting officers to search the car.

The affidavit states that officers found 108,000 fentanyl pills worth an estimated $1,620,000.

In an interview, Tentory-Ortega told officers she picked up the package in California but thought it was Botox. She then said she knew it was probably drugs or cash, the affidavit states.

Tentory-Ortega was booked into Purgatory Correctional Facility on the aforementioned charges.
