Trailer carrying migrants overturns in Sonora, 14 injured

Three migrants were reportedly killed and 14 others injured on Monday when a semi-trailer truck overturned in an accident on Federal Highway 15 in Sonora.

The accident occurred at kilometer 82 of the highway, south of the municipality of Navojoa, after the trailer had crossed the southern border with the state of Sinaloa. Several publications reported the deaths of the three migrants, but by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sonora authorities had not released a statement confirming any casualties.

News site López-Dóriga.com reported that the truck hit a “building” on the side of the road, causing the driver to lose control. The semi-trailer veered off the road and overturned near the village of Estación Luis in Sonora.

According to a report by the news site Infobae, there were at least 130 migrants in the semi-trailer of the truck that was reportedly transporting the migrants to the US border. The accident occurred about 670 kilometers south of the US city of Nogales in the state of Arizona.

Videos posted on social media showed that the first people on the scene – travelers on the highway – tried to open the back of the trailer, which had come to rest on its right side next to the road. A video posted by Infobae showed victims being rescued through holes in the roof of the overturned trailer before authorities arrived.

Initial reports said the migrants were from Guatemala, but authorities have not confirmed this information. News website López-Dóriga.com reported that many of the suspected undocumented migrants fled the scene immediately after the accident to avoid arrest by authorities.

Neither the whereabouts of the trailer driver nor his condition were known until Tuesday. Enfoque Noticias reported that the driver had fled the scene of the accident.

Agents from the Sonora Civil Protection Unit in Navojoa responded to the accident and were assisted by officials from Sinaloa, as passersby quickly notified authorities in both states after the accident.

Paramedics from Navojoa and rescue workers from Ahome, Sinaloa, tended to the injured. Several of the injured were trapped in the damaged trailer. Sonora Civil Protection confirmed that two of the 14 injured migrants were taken to Ahome for treatment, while the other 12 were admitted to hospitals in Navojoa.

Federal Highway 15 in Sonora is a popular route for transporting undocumented immigrants to the United States, according to the National Migration Institute (INM). Recent INM operations near the Sonora border cities of Nogales and San Luis Río Colorado resulted in the arrest of hundreds of migrants attempting to enter the United States illegally.
