Kayla Schroeder, 25, allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking two alcoholic beverages before the accident, which occurred Saturday on Deininger Road.

YORK, Pennsylvania – A York County woman was driving under the influence of drugs and crashed her car into a tree Saturday night, seriously injuring three young passengers, Springettsbury Township police said in their indictment.

Kayla Denise Schroeder, 25, of Cockeysville, is charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, endangering the welfare of a child, multiple counts of drunken driving and a traffic violation in connection with the alleged incident, which police say occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of Deininger Road.

According to police, Schroeder was also seriously injured in the accident. The three injured passengers were 11, 7 and 9 months old.

The nine-month-old child suffered fractured vertebrae, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a ruptured liver and fluid around the heart, according to police. The seven-year-old had a ruptured stomach, causing stomach contents to leak into the abdomen, which required surgery to repair, police said.

Both children were taken to Hershey Medical Center for further treatment.

The eleven-year-old suffered a head injury and was able to leave the hospital that same evening, according to police.

According to police, Schroeder was the driver of the vehicle. She is said to have shown signs of intoxication and the officers noticed the smell of alcohol on her, the complaint states.

Schroeder reportedly told police before the accident that she had left a birthday party at Rocky Ridge County Park. She also admitted to smoking marijuana and consuming two alcoholic beverages a few hours earlier, police said.

Officers administered a breathalyzer test, and according to the complaint, Schroeder allegedly performed poorly.

She was subsequently arrested and taken to York Hospital, where she was allegedly given a blood sample.
