Man dead after suspected July 4 murder in Wisconsin, suspect taken into custody

COLUMBUS, Wis. (WFRV) – One person was arrested early Thursday morning following an alleged homicide in a downtown area.

According to a news release, a Columbus Police Department officer heard what sounded like fireworks downtown and arrived to find an adult male who had been shot.


The officer attempted to save the victim’s life, but a short time later he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Through an investigation and review of various video footage, a suspect was identified and taken into custody in the City of Madison shortly before 2:00 p.m. The firearm believed to have been used in the alleged crime was found along the path the suspect fled.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says there is no danger to the public as the suspect is in custody and is believed to have acted alone.

An official press conference is expected on Friday at 10:00 a.m., where further information on the incident will be released.
