Police shot and killed armed man at emergency shelter in Cranberry

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — Pennsylvania State Police said officers shot and killed an armed man they were searching for Tuesday while township residents sought shelter, Pennsylvania State Police said.

State police and the Butler County District Attorney’s Office continue to investigate the fatal shooting of Logan Cumberland, 37, of Ellwood City, Lawrence County, near the Cranberry Heights Golf Course, in which a police officer participated.

State police released Cumberland’s name and cause of death on Wednesday.

On Tuesday around 10:30 a.m., Cranberry Police were notified of a suspicious man who had stopped his vehicle near the entrance to a golf course. The man, who left the immediate area before police arrived, was armed with a rifle.

Responding officers found the vehicle and discovered numerous other firearms inside. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including a Pennsylvania State Police flight unit, arrived on scene and assisted in the search for the man.

Residents of the community were told to shelter in place around 1 p.m. At around 3 p.m., officers spotted the man in a wooded area near the golf course. They confronted the suspect and shot him, state police said.

None of the officers were injured. State police did not disclose in a news release whether Cumberland fired any shots before his death.
