4 people die in serious multi-vehicle crash after chase ends with DUI suspect in Upland

UPLAND, Calif. (KABC) – Four people were killed in a serious crash early Friday that ended in Upland after a man accused of drunk driving and several police officers were involved in a chase.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred around 2 a.m. near the intersection of West 16th Street and North Mountain Avenue, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Four men were pronounced dead at the scene, the spokesman said. Their ages and identities were not initially disclosed.

Two innocent victims in one of the cars were taken to a hospital but appeared to be fine, authorities said.

According to the sheriff’s department, the chase began when a deputy attempted to stop a driver suspected of driving under the influence.

The force of the accident left debris scattered across the entire intersection, including two demolished vehicles. The wreckage of one car landed on the lawn of a nearby shopping center.

Neither police officers nor sheriff’s deputies were injured in the pile-up.

Upland police did not immediately respond to ABC7’s request for comment.
