Tripura Traffic Police have taken significant action against traffic violations, seizing over 21,000 driving licences and cancelling more than 7,000 in the last six months. This aggressive campaign aims to tackle illegal parking and congestion in Agartala and across the state and reflects a strong commitment to improving road safety and enforcing traffic laws.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajib Dutta said the crackdown was part of a comprehensive strategy to instill discipline among drivers and improve road safety. Officers carried out regular checks and patrols, especially in busy areas, to identify and punish traffic offenders. These measures have resulted in a noticeable improvement in traffic flow and a reduction in accidents, said Dutta.

Police have been particularly cracking down on parking violations, which are a major cause of congestion in urban areas. In addition to confiscating driving licenses, authorities have imposed heavy fines on offenders. Dutta pointed out that repeat offenders face harsher penalties, including longer suspensions and possible legal action. This zero-tolerance approach aims to deter repeat offenders and encourage compliance with traffic rules.

The response from the public to the crackdown has been mixed. While many residents welcome the efforts to decongest the city and improve security, some have raised concerns about the severity of the measures. “It’s good that the police are taking action, but they should also ensure that there is enough parking space,” said local shopkeeper Ranjit Das. Authorities have acknowledged these concerns and are working with municipal authorities to address the parking shortage.

Education and awareness campaigns are also part of the strategy. The traffic police have held workshops and seminars in schools and communities to educate people on the importance of obeying traffic rules. They have also used social media platforms to reach a wider audience by sharing safe driving tips and updates on enforcement operations.

This ongoing enforcement campaign reflects a broader initiative by the Tripura government to modernise the state’s traffic management system. There are plans to introduce more advanced technologies such as automatic traffic signals and surveillance cameras to improve monitoring and enforcement capabilities.

While police continue their actions, they remain committed to making the state’s roads safer for everyone. Through strict enforcement and public awareness, they aim to create a culture of responsible driving and reduce the number of traffic violations.
