Investigation reveals what happened before pilot crashed in Terryville

TERRYVILLE, Connecticut (WTNH) – On Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board released its report following the investigation into the crash of a small Cessna 172 airplane in Terryville on June 3.

According to the report, the student pilot stated that his plane’s fuel tanks were full before departing for a solo cross-country training flight from New York. About halfway through the flight, the engine began to slow until it lost all power and the propeller stopped turning at 5,500 feet.

From there, the unnamed pilot attempted to restart the engine, but the propeller would not turn. The pilot then took evasive action and attempted to glide to a nearby airport, but he landed in “wooded terrain” about a mile from the target.

The plane crashed shortly before 11 a.m. near Gentile’s Campground on Mount Tobe Road, right next to Waterbury Airport.

Plymouth police said the plane’s pilot was taken to a local hospital with injuries. Her current condition was not mentioned in the report.

“She had a little blood, but she was able to talk,” said Plymouth Fire Chief Mark Sekorski. “It didn’t look like she had life-threatening injuries. It could have been a disaster here. They just didn’t have power to most of the campground.”
