New era | Couple killed in road accident in Lalmonirhat

A couple was killed in an accident on the Dhaka-Kurigram highway in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila on Sunday evening.

The victims, 40-year-old Babu Mia and his 35-year-old wife Roksana Begum, were riding a motorcycle when they collided with a bus.

Babu Mia, a cable contractor from Nagarakuri in Gunaigach union of Ulipur upazila, and his wife leave behind two small children.

The fatal incident occurred around 10 pm when they were returning home to Kurigram from a relative’s house in Lalmonirhat.

Eyewitnesses said that the Shatata Enterprise night bus was on its way from Kurigram to Dhaka when it hit the couple near Fakir Takeya and crushed them under its wheels. The impact was so severe that Babu Mia and Roksana Begum died at the scene.

Angry at the tragedy, residents blocked the highway for an hour and a half.

They only dispersed after the police assured them that appropriate action would be taken.

Omar Faruq, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police station, confirmed the incident.
