Man with knife arrested in Mission after barricading himself in his car

Shortly after 4:20 p.m., a man was arrested by San Francisco police after sitting barricaded in a car and surrounded by police for hours on McCoppin Street on the northern edge of the Mission.

According to a witness, the man, allegedly armed with a knife, approached a group of three people sitting in a car parked in the second row.

The witness, who lives on McCoppin but did not want to be identified, said the three people were waiting for him in the car when the man approached them with a knife.

When the witness came out of his apartment, he saw the man with the knife standing on the driver’s side of the car and apparently preparing to slash the tire. The man armed with the knife told the witness to “go home” and pointed to the witness’ apartment.

The witness then got into the car, drove away with the other three people and called the police, who arrived about 15 minutes later. By this time, the man had already locked himself in a nearby car and refused to get out.

McCoppin Street between Valencia and Otis Street has been cordoned off since around 12:45 today, and around a dozen police and fire engines are on site. Police officers tried for hours to lure the man out of the car, sometimes using loudspeakers.

Officers blocked off the street in all directions and even a small parking enforcement vehicle was deployed. At around 4:20 p.m., officers arrested the man, handcuffed him to a stretcher and placed a mesh bag over his face while emergency responders wheeled him into an ambulance.

The police department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
