Taxi driver convicted of raping two female passengers

A Dublin taxi driver has been remanded in custody after being found guilty of raping two young passengers on separate days in June and August 2022.

Raymond Shorten, of Melrose Crescent, Clondalkin, could not be named during the trial but can now be identified following his conviction.

The first survivor was just 19 years old when Raymond Shorten raped her in the back seat of his taxi in June 2022 while driving her home from a night out in Dublin.

The second woman was 20 years old when he did the same thing to her just two months later.

DNA analysis linked Shorten to the women, but he claimed the sex between them was consensual and even suggested that it was they who had approached him.

The first woman described how she repeatedly lost consciousness during the rape after a meeting with colleagues.

After Shorten raped the second woman in August 2022, the jury heard that he took her home and charged her €70 for the ride.

It didn’t take long for the jury to return their guilty verdicts after deliberating for just over an hour.

His sentencing will take place next month.
