Elgin man sentenced to 8 years in prison for sexually assaulting college student in his home – Chicago Tribune

An Elgin man who sexually abused a student at the school where he worked has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Magdiel Perez, 27, of the first block of Lockman Circle, was found guilty in April of two counts of sexual assault. The trial was presided over by Kane County Judge John Barsanti, who also handed down the sentence, according to a news release from the Kane County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Perez had sexual contact on more than one occasion between May 1, 2022, and August 30, 2022, with a female student who attended Tefft Middle School in Streamwood, where he worked as a hallway monitor. Perez drove the victim to his home in Elgin, where sexual contact occurred, the release said.

After the student disclosed what had happened, school officials contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and placed Perez on leave.

While prosecutors sought a prison sentence of 16 years, the judge opted for an eight-year sentence, which is the minimum he could have imposed, the press release said. Perez must serve 85% of the sentence and register as a sex offender for life under state law.

“As a society, we expect our children to be able to trust the adults at their school,” Assistant District Attorney Stacey Wittman said in a statement. “This defendant took advantage of this student’s trust and sexually abused her. I am grateful to this victim for being willing to face her abuser in court.”
