Police dog killed on duty

PROSPERITY, SC (WHNS/Gray News) – A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division police dog was shot in the line of duty while attempting to make an arrest.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues at SLED regarding the murder of K-9 Agent Coba. He was a brave agent and saved the lives of agents and deputies,” the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook.

According to authorities, K-9 Coba was working with SLED agents and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office officers to execute an arrest warrant for a fugitive crime.

The suspect was found hiding in a family member’s home.

Coba confronted the suspect inside the house and was shot. Officers returned fire on the suspect, eliminating the threat.

The dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian but succumbed to his injuries.

“It was a horrific experience. I pray that people understand that there are people and animals willing to sacrifice their lives to protect our community,” the sheriff’s office continued.

The suspect was taken to an area trauma center and several officers were treated for minor cuts.

According to official information, 4-year-old Coba is a Belgian Malinois mix and joined the police in 2021.

The K-9 officer served alongside Special Agent Richard “Cole” Powell and lived with his family.
