One teenager killed in shooting, two men arrested

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) has arrested two men after a 19-year-old man was accidentally shot.

A press release said the shooting occurred at 3:07 p.m. Monday in the area of ​​South 3rd Avenue and East 20th Street after YPD received reports of an accidental shooting in the area.

The YPD says they spoke to a 23-year-old man who said he was cleaning his rifle when a shot went off, killing the 19-year-old man, identified as Raymond Ruiz.

However, the YPD stated that during the course of the investigation it was discovered that another 19-year-old man “was the one who recklessly handled the rifle” and killed Ruiz, after which the suspect fled the scene.

The 19-year-old suspect later turned himself in on Monday around 7:30 p.m. and YPD said they took him into custody “without incident.” The 19-year-old suspect was then arrested on charges of first-degree murder and disorderly conduct with a weapon.

After arresting the 19-year-old suspect, the YPD arrested the 23-year-old man and booked him for obstruction of justice and making false statements.

After Ruiz was identified, next of kin were notified, the YPD said.
