Man who sexually abused teenager and woman is jailed – police urge other victims to come forward

On the afternoon of January 16, 25-year-old Irtiza Abbas was loitering near Aston University in Birmingham and stalking a woman who was walking alone.

He followed her along the Dartmouth Middleway for a while to make sure she was alone and no one was around before grabbing and attacking her.

Irtiza Abbas was arrested

In April, Abbas struck again when he followed a 15-year-old girl on her way home in the Perry Barr district of Birmingham.

He was caught on surveillance cameras, following closely behind her, looking around to make sure he was alone.

Only when he had made sure that no one was nearby did he grab the girl and abuse her.

The victim called a nearby relative and they drove around the area until they spotted Abbas and confronted him.

However, after a struggle, he managed to escape and flee the scene.

Before the police could identify the suspect, they analyzed the video footage from the surveillance cameras and linked them together.

Irtiza Abbas, of Lozells Road, Birmingham, was arrested at his home on April 22 and officers found clothing matching the description in the video footage.

Although he did not admit guilt during police questioning, he pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to two years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday 5 June.

West Midlands Police have now released video footage of Abbas and called on any other suspected victims to come forward.

Det Insp Joe Davenport said: “CCTV showed him loitering in the street and carefully selecting his victims. He followed them to make sure they were alone before he struck.”

“Thanks to the support and courage of the victims, and the efforts of our teams to track down every single piece of CCTV we could find, we have succeeded in taking a serial offender and potentially dangerous man, whose crimes were deliberate, systematic and repeated, off the streets of Birmingham.

“If anyone feels that something similar has happened to them and they have not come forward, we ask them to reconsider. Please contact me or one of my team and we promise that we will take your report seriously.”

Any suspected victims have been asked to contact West Midlands Police via live chat on their website or by calling 101 quoting crime number 20/412643/24.
