Petti Hendrix delivers pop-punk anthem “Better Off Dead”

Petty Hendrix continues a string of great singles with “Better Off Dead” (including a remix of his song “Be OK” featuring Good Charlotte and Waterparks). Produced by frequent collaborator Robbie Hiser, it’s a pop-punk anthem that bridges the genre’s late ’90s/early 2000s boom and its recent pop/hip-hop-friendly resurgence. It finds Hendrix asking, “Am I better off with you or am I dead?”

Hendrix recently talked about his collaboration with Robbie Hiser AP“Working with Robbie was amazing. He’s a legend in my eyes. He let me be a student around him. I asked a million questions and we really got to know each other before we made music. I think that’s crucial considering where I come from where it’s not so easy to trust, especially in an environment that requires a little bit of vulnerability, and I think that helps the overall sound and production of this project because there was an understanding – like between a sensei and his student.”

He added of his writing process: “I write or come up with a concept based on something that is currently bothering me in my life. Most of the time I draw on everyday conversations. For example, if one of my friends is talking to me about a breakup and it resonates with me, I can channel that pain and turn that situation into a song based on their emotions, feelings and conversations. Music is such a feeling thing, so when it comes to performing in the studio or on stage, I try to really relax and give it my all. I truly believe every word, story or feeling that is expressed, but also when it is all said and done, I know I gave it my all.”
