CCSO: Police discover body of missing fisherman in West Ashley

(UPDATE, 8:00 p.m.) One person died Thursday afternoon after jumping into the water, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to police, the person jumped into the water to “cool off” when he was swept away by the current.

The body was recovered after the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office closed Savannah Highway near Dobbin Road shortly before 5 p.m.

Shortly before 8 p.m. the northbound lanes were reopened.

(UPDATE, 7:40 p.m.) The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said the northbound lanes have reopened.

An incident in West Ashley on Thursday afternoon prompted the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) to close Savannah Highway near Dobbin Road.

The CCSO announced the road closure in the 2600 block just before 5 p.m. Motorists will use Bees Ferry Road as an alternate route.

According to police, the CCSO is responding to reports of a missing fisherman near the Bar On The River. That section of Savannah Highway will be closed for the foreseeable future. Police said drivers will have to find an alternate route.

A large crane was spotted at the scene of the accident.
