Albany teen charged with rape; others arrested for gun possession

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) — An Albany teenager is facing rape charges following an alleged assault. Police say several weapons were also found during the investigation.

On May 18, a sexual assault was reported to Albany Police. Police said a gun was used as an intimidation weapon during the assault. The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old Albany boy.


On June 5, police executed a search warrant on a home in the 500 block of Lark Drive as part of an ongoing investigation. Police found four handguns, two of which were loaded. Several people were arrested, including the 17-year-old sexual assault suspect.

The 17-year-old was charged with first-degree rape, second-degree illegal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing and five counts of third-degree illegal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned and remanded to a juvenile detention center. His name is being withheld due to his age.

A 15-year-old girl has been charged with five counts of third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. She will appear before the Albany County Probation Department at a later date. Her name is being withheld because of her age.

Chyna Dowdell, 19, of Albany, was charged with five counts of third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. She was arraigned and remanded to the Albany County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Shaheim Smith, 22, of Albany, was charged with five counts of third-degree illegal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned and remanded to the Albany County Jail on a $40,000 fine.

Octavia Smith, 40, of Albany, was charged with two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and six counts of third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. She was arraigned and taken to the Albany County Jail.
