Driver arrested in Deltona after leading police on a chase across the county, sheriff’s office says

DELTONA, Florida. – A man was arrested in Deltona on Friday after leading police on a chase out of Seminole County, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Timothy Shawter, 37, was arrested hours after getting out of his car onto a dirt road off Howland Boulevard, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

Volusia County officials had already been notified by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office that Shawter was heading into their jurisdiction, the statement said. While they were searching the area off Howland Boulevard with at least one tracking dog unit and assistance from Seminole’s Alert One helicopter, the helicopter crew reported that Shawter had run into the backyard of a home in the 2500 block, the statement said.

The home’s residents were uncooperative and left the scene while officers remained behind, partially protected by Volusia’s BearCat armored SWAT vehicle, the statement said.

A body-worn camera video released Saturday morning shows Volusia officers calling for Shawter, who shows up several hours later, follows orders and is handcuffed without further incident.

A search of the vehicle driven by Shawter revealed approximately 31 grams of cocaine and a Glock that had been reported stolen in Seminole County, the statement said.

Shawter is charged with fleeing police with disregard for the safety of persons and property, driving on a revoked, suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, trafficking cocaine/mixtures from 28 grams to 150 kilograms, aggravated theft of a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon in the state and three counts of out-of-county counts, two of which stem from probation violations in Seminole County – allegedly for driving with a revoked license and tampering with an electronic monitoring device – while the other count is a fugitive from justice charge out of Georgia, which investigators say is related to probation violations involving aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail at the time of this report, according to the sheriff’s office.

Additional charges from Seminole County against Shawter are still pending, the statement said.
