On the night of May 31, Kiev was the target of a Russian missile attack.

Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said in a Telegram post that according to preliminary data, Russian forces probably used cruise missiles.

All missiles were successfully intercepted and destroyed by the air defense system.

Debris from the rockets caused a fire in a non-residential building in Holosiivskyi district. Emergency services responded immediately.

There are currently no reports of casualties.

A Kyiv Independent reporter in the city center was awakened by an air raid siren at around 3:20 a.m. local time; local Telegram channels reported a single Shahed drone in the area.

Fifteen minutes later the all-clear was given, but at 4:50 a.m. a second alarm sounded, followed shortly afterwards by an explosion in the distance.

The frequency and intensity of missile and drone attacks have increased throughout Ukraine in recent months.

The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, recently called on EU member states to supply Ukraine with additional missile defense systems and raised the alarm about an escalation of Russian attacks.
