Four sports associations suspended due to elections – Harin Fernando

Sports Minister Harin Fernando said the suspension of four sports associations was only for the purpose of holding elections for office holders.

He stressed that the government will still not appoint interim committees for sports associations.

Minister Harin Fernando’s comments come after the suspension of four sports associations was announced in the Official Gazette on Wednesday (29 May).

According to the Gazette, the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation, Sri Lanka Rugby Federation, Sri Lanka Automobile Federation and Sri Lanka Netball Federation have been suspended with effect from May 29, 2024.

The Gazette also announced the appointment of Professor (Rear Admiral) Shemal Fernando, Director General, Department of Sports Development, as the Authority in Charge, effective Wednesday.

“The measure has been taken as a temporary mechanism to continue with the administrative and other necessary activities of the said National Association/Sports Federation, call and conduct the relevant elections and carry out the functions properly until then,” the Gazette said. (News agency)
