The federal government has suspended Milwaukee Public Schools’ (MPS) Head Start program following allegations of abuse and improper oversight.

MPS confirmed that funding has been lost for the remainder of the current grant year, which ends this month.

Complaints to federal and state authorities led to investigations by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, which found that Head Start staff abused children.

Federal investigators also reported cases in which bus drivers dropped off children as young as three years old alone or in the wrong locations.

MPS officials say these issues have been resolved and hope to restore funding next month.
