Two missing climbers found dead near Mount Everest summit, Sherpa guide not found | World News

Nepali climber Binod Babu Bastakoti and Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui were found dead near the summit of Mount Everest, Everest Base Camp officials confirmed. Both climbers had been missing for days. A mountain guide named Nawang Sherpa, who accompanied Kenyan climber Kirui into the death zone, remains missing.

According to official sources, Bastakoti died during the descent at Camp IV and Kirui was found by Seven Summit Treks rescuers a few meters below the summit of Mount Everest. According to expedition organizer Narbin Magar of Booking Own Pvt. Ltd, the Nepali climber died above Camp IV on Wednesday after suffering altitude sickness during the descent from the summit point at around 8,300 meters.

According to the report, the Kenyan attempted to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen and lost radio contact at Bishop Rock.

“Nawang had last communicated with the officials at Bishop Rock base camp that Kirui had refused to return and had even drunk oxygen from the bottle, but was behaving abnormally,” said one of the officials on the search team.

Kenyan mountaineer Kirui became the first African to climb a peak over 8,000 metres without supplemental oxygen when he climbed Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) in September 2023. He was a renowned mountaineer known for several quick ascents of Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), completing the round trip in just 15 hours. He also climbed Mount Kenya (5,199 m) more than 20 times, setting course records on his three main routes.

Meanwhile, Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Khan recently climbed Mount Everest without using supplemental oxygen, making Khan the second Pakistani to climb the world’s highest peak without oxygen.
