Davis police arrest two men and seize $80,000 worth of Legos

Davis police arrested two men after finding $80,000 worth of stolen LEGO sets and other items on them. Officials said the merchandise was stolen from numerous stores in Davis as part of a large-scale retail theft. “Usually it’s organized with the intent of people looking for specific items to give to someone else who will then sell them at a market,” said Assistant Chief Todd Henry. The suspect is 44-year-old Deyrick Bobeda of Elk Grove and 28-year-old Adrian Chao of Sacramento were arrested on organized retail theft and conspiracy charges. “Most of the time we see large-scale organizations like this. Often they come from cities that are outside our jurisdiction or within the city,” Henry said. Michael Kobayashi, who works at the Akiba HQ Anime Store in Davis, said some model kits can cost hundreds of dollars. “They can sell for quite a bit,” Kobayashi said. “You just market them down a bit and then you can sell them really quickly.” Kobayashi said some of her other toy stores have been targeted in the past. “At one point our U-Hauls were stolen and there was a ton of product worth at least $10,000,” Kobayashi said. He believes the high demand for these model kits makes it easy for thieves to make a profit. To protect their business, Kobayashi said they have security cameras and an alarm system set up. Davis police told KCRA 3 they believe more people may be involved in this retail theft. That’s why she works closely with companies to address the problem.

Officials said the merchandise was stolen from numerous stores in Davis as part of a large-scale retail theft.

“It’s usually organized with the intent that people go there to look for specific items that they can give to someone else who will then sell them at a market,” said Assistant Manager Todd Henry.

The suspects, 44-year-old Deyrick Bobeda of Elk Grove and 28-year-old Adrian Chao of Sacramento, were arrested on organized retail theft and conspiracy charges.

“In most cases, large-scale organized (thefts) of this nature occur. Often they come from cities outside of our jurisdiction or within the city,” Henry said.

Michael Kobayashi, who works at the Akiba HQ Anime Store in Davis, said some model kits can cost hundreds of dollars.

“They can sell pretty high,” Kobayashi said. “You just market them down a bit and then you can sell them off very quickly.”

Kobayashi said some of her other toy stores have been targeted in the past.

“At one point, one of our U-Hauls was stolen and it contained a ton of product worth at least $10,000,” Kobayashi said.

He believes the high demand for these model kits makes it easy for thieves to make a profit.

To protect their business, Kobayashi said they set up surveillance cameras and an alarm system.
