Atlanta School Board Plans Public Hearings on Property Tax Increase

The Atlanta School Board announced plans to increase the property taxes it collects this year in 2024 by 4.22 percent from the millage reduction rate of $18.784.

The budget tentatively adopted by the Atlanta school board — a record $1.8 billion — calls for a higher tax rate than the reduced tax rate. Georgia law requires the board to hold three public hearings on the issue.

Public hearings on the tax increase will be held at the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Learning and Leadership Building, located at 130 Trinity Avenue, SW, on August 5 at 6 p.m. and August 12 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The tax rate is the amount of taxes paid per $1,000 of a property’s value. Last year, there was also an increase due to rising property values: a $325,000 home with a homestead exemption saw its tax increase by $137.
