Twin Falls Police introduce crime mapping software

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – If you are interested in the crimes that have occurred in our community, be it robbery, car theft or other reports, you can now view those reports online.

Twin Falls Police have unveiled their new crime mapping software, giving the public better access to information about what is happening in their neighborhood.

“Citizens can go online and look at a map and search by date range, crime type and location to see the specific reports we take. You’ll see a lot of auto thefts, property damage, assault or battery in there,” said Sergeant Steven Gassert.

According to Sergeant Gassert, the process of creating this map began in 2021.

“We launched the program in July 2021. After getting it up and running and entering data into the system for a few years, we were able to develop this crime mapping program to make that information available to the public,” Gassert said.

The software can filter out information and create charts showing the days, weeks and percentages of crime. You can also set it up to send alerts about your neighborhood directly to you.

“The most important thing to remember is that it’s not live, it’s not one of those things where you see it immediately once we file the police report,” Gassert said. “It takes a little while for the incident to actually show up there because we go through a validation and approval process before that information is released to the public.”

Victims concerned about their privacy and safety because of the new crime map need not be alarmed. The police department shares a general location online, not the exact location of a report.
