Maine State Police Bomb Disposal Squad Attacks Penobscot County Home

Following a “controlled detonation” on July 16, this is the second time in recent weeks that bomb experts have been deployed to Call Road in Milford.

The Maine State Police bomb squad is “investigating a crime scene for potentially dangerous explosive devices,” a post on the department’s Facebook page said. Officials say there is no danger to the public. The bomb squad is reportedly at a home on Call Road in the Penobscot County town of Milford. This is the second time in recent weeks bomb squads have been dispatched to Call Road. In the early morning hours of July 15, three children were rescued from a home and a 46-year-old resident was arrested. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office says Old Town police were approached around 12:50 a.m. by a man who told them William Abernathy, 46, of Milford had attacked his girlfriend and then claimed he was going to blow up a home on Call Road. Old Town officers were able to locate the attack victim and learned there were children in the home with Abernathy. When officers arrived, Abernathy was reportedly outside the home, carrying a large knife and several other weapons. Abernathy dropped the weapons when ordered to do so by Penobscot County Sheriff’s officers, according to the sheriff’s office. Old Town police officers approaching the home noticed the smell of gas and could hear someone upstairs calling for help. After breaking down a locked bedroom door, they were able to safely get three children and another person who needed help out. It took several officers from local, county and state agencies several hours to find and safely detonate “multiple explosive devices” inside the home. William Abernathy is now charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, assault in a domestic setting, terrorizing in a domestic setting with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence threats with a dangerous weapon and false imprisonment. Local authorities have not confirmed that the presence of bomb technicians on Call Road Friday night is related to Abernathy’s arrest earlier this month.
