Qantas passenger finds “disgusting” food on bread in the business lounge

A Qantas business lounge had to be scrapped after a passenger discovered mould on his sandwich bread – but many say this type of ‘quality’ is to be expected from Qantas lounges these days.

The frequent flyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, was waiting for his delayed flight at Sydney Airport on April 1 and decided to make himself a sandwich at the food station in the lounge… only to find that the bread was infected with mold.

“I took it and waited for a while until a member of staff attended to it,” they told Yahoo News Australia. “No apology, they just took it back to the kitchen and a few minutes later a member of staff checked the bread and removed about half of it.”

The passenger says that in the time between notifying staff and removing some of the bread, he saw “several people” making sandwiches with it.

Passengers say they are ‘avoiding’ Qantas domestic lounges

“It feels representative of the Qantas brand over the last few years,” the traveler continued, explaining that he “normally avoids” going to the Qantas lounge in Sydney because it is “so bad.”

“I try to arrive at the airport at the last minute and just wait at the gate. This time my flight was delayed so I paid a visit, but I won’t do that again.”

This Qantas passenger is not alone in his opinion after sharing the image of the bread in an Australian frequent flyer group. Others reported similar experiences – one even described the find as “gross”.

“Last year I got free access to the lounge in Brisbane. The first time I went there I felt like I was in the cool kids’ club,” one began. “I walked in, looked at the bland food and the occupied seats, turned around and then went to the nearest cafe for a hot breakfast with a good coffee…”

“I went to make a toastie in the Business Lounge in Melbourne on March 23 and my bread was also mouldy. Same little dot on the inside of the loaf! Yuck!” said another.

Yahoo has reached out to Qantas for comment and is awaiting a response.

The Qantas International Business Lounge also recently called

One Australian traveller said he “can’t believe how bad” Qantas has become while airfares remain astronomically high, criticising the condition of one of the airline’s international business lounges, which he recently described as “just embarrassing”.

In a previous conversation with Yahoo, the traveler said he had been a Qantas Lifetime Gold frequent flyer for “nearly 20 years” but “stopped flying (regularly) with them a long time ago” due to “increased costs and declining service.”

A simple detail in the business class lounge made it clear to him how low the company had sunk.

Yahoo has learned that Qantas’ Sydney International Business Lounge is undergoing a complete renovation as part of a $100 million investment in customer comfort.
