CBD gummy bear incident at Camp Westwood YMCA – NBC Boston

Four children were hospitalized last week after eating CBD gummy bears at a YMCA summer camp in Coventry, Rhode Island.

Emergency crews were called to Camp Westwood YMCA on Thursday morning because four campers were vomiting, Boston NBC10 affiliate WJAR reported. The children, ages 12 to 15, were taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

“It’s concerning because something is obviously wrong because they’re vomiting,” Western Coventry Fire District Captain Robert Mann told WJAR. “The good thing is they were conscious and were able to clear their airways on their own so they were able to vomit.”

The YMCA told WJAR that a child brought them and left them in a restroom where there was no supervisor supervising them.

“Because counselors do not accompany campers to the restroom stalls, our counselor learned of this incident when campers came out of the restroom and announced that they believed they had CBD-infused gummies,” said Jeff Merhige, CEO of the YMCA of Pawtucket, in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, the camp immediately called the city’s emergency services and the affected campers were transported for medical observation. We continue to monitor this situation and commend our staff for their proactive approach to this incident.”

There is no information about how many gummy bears the children ate or whether they knew that they contained CBD.

Fire officials told WJAR they are responding to an increasing number of calls about children eating CBD gummy bears.

“There are a lot of medical issues to worry about, not to mention the fact that we don’t know exactly what they took or how much,” Mann said. “Teach your children not to take drugs or medications from anyone other than a doctor or a family member, a trusted family member.”
