6 Indians missing in Nepal after landslide pushes their bus into river

New Delhi :

At least six Indians were among more than 60 people believed to be missing in Nepal after a landslide triggered by heavy rains pushed two buses into a river on Friday.

The two buses carrying 65 passengers disappeared in the Trishuli river in the Simaltal area on the Narayanghat-Mugling road in Chitwan district, about 100 kilometers from the capital Kathmandu. The accident occurred at around 3.30 a.m., an official said.

While 24 people were on board the Angel bus heading to Kathmandu, 41 other passengers were travelling in the Ganpati Deluxe, which went from the Nepalese capital to Gaur.

The missing Indian nationals were identified as Santosh Thakur, Surendra Sah, Adit Miyaan, Sunil, Shahnawaj Alam and Ansari.

“We are not sure of the total number as the buses may have picked up more people along the way,” Chitwan district official Khimananda Bhusal told AFP.

“The river has swollen and no one else has been found so far,” he said.

Dozens of search and rescue workers were combing the accident site for survivors, he said.

Three passengers of the Ganpati Deluxe bus reportedly escaped by jumping out of the vehicle.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” expressed his grief over the accident and issued instructions for immediate search and rescue measures.

According to reports, more than 90 people have died in Nepal due to landslides and floods since mid-June.
