Officers with the Salina Police Department (SPD) responded to a residence in the 400 block of Baker Street on Monday after a 34-year-old Salina woman called 911 after a man choked and bit her.

Feldman said officers arrived at the scene at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 8

“She stated that she had an accomplice and that he had been in the apartment,” said SPD Captain James Feldman. “She left one of the rooms when she heard glass breaking in another room.”

When she came out of the room, she had her cell phone in her hand. The employee came up to her and snatched it from her hand, Feldman said.

The SPD later identified the man as 29-year-old Joseph Daulton.

The 34-year-old woman became afraid of Daulton and began hitting him in an attempt to run away. She then went into another room and he followed her.

“He told her she wasn’t going to leave. She put her shoes on and said she needed to get a drink,” Feldman said. “Then he came up behind her, put his arm around her neck and choked her. She had trouble breathing. As he continued, he eventually bit her ear and the left side of her back.”

Daulton told the woman he would give her her phone back if she didn’t call the police.

“She still wasn’t let out of the room. She asked for a drink again,” Feldman said. “She tried to get out the bathroom window when he grabbed her and pulled her back inside.”

According to the SPD report, Daulton allowed her to go into another room to talk. She told Daulton she was leaving. He responded by grabbing her from behind again and biting her cheek.

“Then she grabbed a pole and punched and kicked him to get him away from her. She grabbed her bag and went outside where she called the police,” Feldman said.

Daulton was not at the scene when police arrived Monday evening.

“We tried to locate him, but he was gone before we arrived,” Feldman said. “Yesterday (July 9) around 7 p.m. we had information that he (Daulton) was in the 200 block of North Phillips.”

Officers found Daulton in the apartment and arrested him without incident.

Daulton was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following charges: aggravated domestic violence, robbery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, domestic violence, and criminal damage to property.
