Deadly fireworks explosion in Hobbs claims one life

One person has died following a fireworks explosion in Hobbs on Thursday.In a statement, a Hobbs Fire Department spokesperson said the accident occurred in the 1300 block of West Sanger Street. First responders arrived at the scene and found the victim had sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Covenant Medical Hospital.Medical personnel made rescue attempts, but they were unsuccessful, according to the spokesperson. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.Captain Adam Marinovich of the Hobbs Fire Department said the city has established a safety zone where people can set off illegal fireworks in hopes of avoiding tragedies like Thursday’s.Marinovich said patrols are also out in the city to make sure no one is setting off fireworks within city limits. “The City of Hobbs wants you to have fun and celebrate Independence Day,” Marinovich said. “It’s a big holiday weekend and we want you to spend it safely and we have created ways to do that.”
