UCLA student sexually assaulted in dorm room, suspect at large

Police are searching for a suspect after a student was sexually assaulted while sleeping in her dorm room at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The incident occurred early Friday around 2:40 a.m. as the student was sleeping in her room at the Saxon Suites, according to UCLA police.

Officials said the suspect entered the student’s room and sexually assaulted her in bed. He then ran out of the building and fled in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s. He has a large build, a curly beard and was last seen wearing all black and a beanie.

It is unclear how the man was able to get into the dorm room or the building. The victim received medical treatment at the scene.

Students were informed of the attack on Friday morning and many said they now feel unwell.

“They sent a report to the police saying a girl was attacked in her sleep, which is very scary, especially for me as a young woman,” said Chantal de la Cruz, a UCLA student. “I’ve lived here for a year and the (crime) reports we usually get are burglary reports and they come off campus, so this is a big shock to everyone. A lot of students don’t feel safe.”

UCLA Police tips for ensuring campus safety:

  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings
  • Report suspicious activity to the police
  • Do not leave building doors open
  • Secure your home by locking all windows and doors
  • Avoid poorly lit or deserted areas when walking at night
  • Take advantage of the UCLA Safe Ride Service and the UCPD CSO Evening Escort
  • In case of emergency, call 911 or the UCLA PD 24-hour hotline at 310-825-1491.
