Police shoot guns at suspected perpetrators of domestic violence

At least one Longmont Police Department officer shot and killed a domestic violence suspect Wednesday around 1:30 p.m.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of Coffman Street to respond to a domestic violence call. Shortly after arriving, officers came into contact with the male suspect. Police report the man was “uncooperative with police and was armed with a large knife.”

The police asked the man several times to drop the knife, but he refused. The officers decided several times to use less lethal force, but it was ineffective, police report.

The man ran toward an occupied residential building and two officers attempted to use deadly force to prevent him from entering the property. Longmont police said at least one officer fired his weapon during the pursuit.

The man continued to refuse to obey the officers’ commands. Additional officers on scene used less lethal force until the man dropped his weapon.

The suspect received medical attention and was transported to a local hospital. His current health status is unknown.

The accident victim reported no serious injuries.

The officers who attempted to use deadly force have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy, pending the completion of an investigation by the Critical Incident Team for the 20th Judicial District.
