New York prosecutors investigate case in which police shot and killed teenager who pointed a replica gun at him

JAKARTA – The New York United States Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into the police case involving the shooting of a 13-year-old boy who aimed a replica firearm at the police officer.

The statement by New York State Attorney General Letitia James came a day after hundreds of people attended a public memorial service in memory of teenager Nyah Mway, who was killed Friday night last week.

Citing a New York state law, James said his agency’s Special Investigation Office investigates all reported incidents involving police officers that may have resulted in the death of a person due to their actions or negligence.

As ABC News reported on Monday, July 1, the shooting of the teen occurred when Utica officers stopped two people as part of an unspecified police investigation, Utica police said.

When he stopped, police said a 13-year-old teenager named Nyah Mway allegedly fled from the police officer who was pursuing him.

According to investigators, Nyah pointed an object that looked like a gun at the police officer, after which one of the officers fired a shot at the teenager.

The teenage shooter is known as Patrick Husnay. The boy was seriously injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police found a replica of a 17th Generation 5 GLOCK pistol with a detachable magazine.
