Maximum sentence for Wilmington man after gun incident at daycare center

WILMINGTON, NC – Shaquille Gregg, a 29-year-old Wilmington resident, was sentenced to 120 months in a federal prison for possession of a stolen, loaded firearm, the maximum sentence for that crime. Gregg pleaded guilty on Feb. 21 after he dropped a firearm on a daycare playground while fleeing from police.

U.S. Attorney Michael Easley emphasized the seriousness of the case, citing Gregg’s affiliation with the Blood gang and the potential danger his actions posed to children. The quick action of officers who found the weapon at the daycare was critical to preventing further potential disasters. This arrest was part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), which aims to curb gang-related activity.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on January 26, 2022, when Gregg fled from Wilmington police on foot after a traffic stop. During the chase, he discarded a stolen Smith and Wesson pistol in the fenced-in playground of a daycare center. DNA testing later confirmed Gregg’s connection to the weapon.

Gregg’s criminal past includes a 2014 incident in which he shot a man who questioned his gang affiliation, resulting in a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was previously sentenced to 75 to 102 months in prison for that and other charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
