José Altuve ejected after violent reaction to umpire’s decision during Astros-Mets game

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was furious with the umpiring crew after they ejected him on a play in the top of the seventh inning of Sunday’s game against the New York Mets, leading to his ejection from the game.

With runners on second and third and two outs in the inning, Altuve, facing a 1-1 count, appeared to foul a 96 MPH sinker from Mets pitcher Luis Severino on his foot. But the officiating crew got together and, after some deliberation, decided the ball was in play and Altuve was out.

The Astros star was absolutely furious and began slamming his helmet and bat on the ground in frustration, actions which led third base umpire Alan Porter to quickly eject him from the contest.

Replays apparently showed the ball making contact with Altuve’s cleat and the Astros star wincing in pain. However, the officiating crew didn’t see it that way and certainly didn’t like Altuve’s reaction.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, is said in the pool report after the match. The game is currently interrupted by rain in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the score tied 4-4.
