Hot and humid today; air quality alert, heat warning in effect

In addition, an Air Quality Alert is in effect from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency for Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, and Preble counties and from the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency for Butler and Warren counties. Today’s conditions are conducive to the formation of ground-level ozone, or smog.

The air quality index forecast for today is 101. Any reading of 101 or higher is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” Older adults, children, and people with respiratory conditions should avoid prolonged, strenuous exercise. When spending time outdoors, take more breaks and engage in less strenuous activities.

To reduce ground-level ozone pollution, people are encouraged to do the following:

  • Avoid driving if possible. If not, consider consolidating or postponing errands until the air quality warning is lifted. Avoid excessive idling while driving, especially at drive-thru windows.
  • Do not refuel your vehicle until after 8 p.m. or wait until the alarm has passed. Make sure that the fuel tank cap is tightly closed so that no petrol fumes can escape.
  • Limit the use of petrol-powered household appliances such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers and chippers.
  • Mow the lawn in the evening when the sun is less intense and the risk of smog formation is lower.
