Second man arrested in Pawtucket shooting

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Pawtucket police have made another arrest in connection with a shooting that occurred in broad daylight earlier this week.

Oswal Sanchez Figueroa, 20, of Providence, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with conspiracy.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers were called to the corner of Jefferson and West Avenue, directly across from Payne Park, after shots were fired in the neighborhood.

According to police, officers found numerous cartridge cases and blood on the ground, but no victim.

Investigators later learned that a 19-year-old man had been shot multiple times as he left a supermarket.

The victim was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital by his friends, where he is now recovering from his injuries.

According to police, two suspects were observed jumping into a car and speeding away from the supermarket while still shooting at the victim.

Using the city’s automatic license plate readers, investigators tracked the vehicle to Providence. Police later found the car in the capital and arrested the suspected shooter, 20-year-old Jose Medina Alvarez.

Medina Alvarez was charged with aggravated assault, drive-by shooting, discharging a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, carrying a pistol without a permit and shooting in a confined space.

Sanchez Figueroa is scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday morning.
